Michael, 35, spent most of his adult life feeling isolated and uncertain about his place in the world. Living with Autism Spectrum Disorder, he struggled with social interactions and found it difficult to connect with others in his community.
"I spent most days alone," Michael explains. "I wanted to be part of my community, but I didn't know how. Social situations made me anxious, and I felt like I didn't fit in anywhere."
Michael's family was concerned about his isolation and the impact it was having on his mental health. Through his NDIS plan, they sought support to help Michael build social connections and find meaningful activities.
WellVibe's Community Participation team worked with Michael to understand his interests and strengths. They discovered he had a passion for helping others and an interest in environmental conservation.
With support from his community participation worker, Michael started volunteering at a local wildlife rescue center. The structured environment and shared purpose made social interaction easier for him.
"Working with animals was perfect for me," Michael says. "I could focus on caring for them, and conversations with other volunteers happened naturally around our shared work. There was no pressure - we were all there because we cared about helping."
As Michael's confidence grew, he began taking on more responsibilities at the rescue center. He started leading educational tours for school groups, something he never imagined he could do.
"The first time I gave a tour, I was terrified," Michael admits. "But my WellVibe support worker practiced with me, and the kids were so interested in what I had to say. Now I love sharing my knowledge about wildlife care."
Two years later, Michael is a valued member of his community. He volunteers three days a week at the wildlife rescue center and has been recognized with a community service award. He's also joined a board game club and regularly attends social gatherings with friends he's made.
"WellVibe helped me discover that I have something valuable to offer my community. I'm not just participating - I'm contributing. That's changed everything for me."
